Melide - A Coruña | Country HouseIn a village that pilgrims have traveled through for centuries, two houses from 1800 are reborn with new life. One completely restored with modern and bright spaces, another in the process of restoration. With outdoor spaces that include traditional alpendre and hórreo, here rural architecture merges with modern and functional finishes.
This property is located in a medieval village in the parish of Melide, situated in the heart of the French Way and just a few kilometres from the centre of Melide. The privileged location places these buildings on the ancient Roman road that still follows the jacobean route, making the property a direct witness to the passage of pilgrims towards Santiago de Compostela.
The complex dates from 1800, and houses two attached stone houses, a perfectly preserved traditional Galician hórreo, a stone alpendre and garden areas presided over by a centenary oak tree.
The village preserves its authentic medieval character, with stone paving on its streets and traditional houses that evoke the historical atmosphere of the Camino de Santiago. Here existed since the 12th century a pilgrim hospital that served as refuge for pilgrims, being rehabilitated in the 15th century, testimony to the long tradition of jacobean hospitality of this enclave.
The property, set on a total area of 688 m² and with 286 m² built, features stone masonry walls and tile roofs that have been carefully restored.
The main house is completely finished and ready to be furnished to the taste of the new owner. Upon entering through the spacious entrance, the distribution unfolds functionally: to the right there is a large bathroom with modern finishes that includes shower, double washbasin and ceiling with exposed wooden beams. To the left, a kitchen with window over the sink and side exit door to the exterior. The ground floor is completed with a large living room with large windows that flood the space with natural light and offer privileged views to the garden, plus a bedroom with built-in wardrobe that has two doors with direct access to the garden area.
The stairs integrated into one side of the kitchen lead to the upper floor, where there is a bedroom under the roof with two windows and wooden slats that divide the space from the stairs.
The adjoining house is in the process of restoration, but will be delivered completely finished. It has new structure including foundation, masonry walls and renovated roof. This construction houses a large entrance area and another area distributed over two floors.
In the exterior, the garden displays a space that combines history and nature. Here stands a beautiful traditional hórreo made of stonework and wood with its characteristic elevated stone columns, testimony to Galician rural architecture.
A large stone alpendre offers covered space for storing vehicles and garden tools. Completing the complex are a stone oven and a water well located at the rear.
The village where this property is located is part of a historical enclave that appears documented in the 12th century Codex Calixtinus as Campus Leporarius (mount of hares). This place was donated by Fernando II to the monastery of Sobrado in 1185, being since then a key point on the jacobean route. Pilgrims of the French Way cross this medieval village before reaching the urban centre of Melide, where the confluence with the Primitive Way occurs.
The proximity to Melide centre allows easy access to all services of this town of more than 7,000 inhabitants, which preserves important heritage testimonies such as the Church of Santa María, a national monument that houses one of the few Romanesque altars in Galicia.
Santiago de Compostela and its international airport are located just 53 km away, while the connection with centres such as Lugo, Arzúa or the Lugo coast places the property at the heart of the main Galician communications.
This is the perfect opportunity to enjoy life in a rural environment with history, surrounded by traditional Galician landscapes, where the tranquillity of the countryside combines with proximity to services, cultural heritage and modern comfort.
